The All Progressive Congress (APC) House of Assembly Candidate for Ikwerre Constituency, Hon. Azubuike Wanjoku has denied allegation leveled against him by Rivers State governor Chief Nyesom Wike, that him, Dakuku Peterside and other leaders of the party caused the fracas that led to shooting at Ikwerre Council Secretariat on Sunday evening.
Isiokpo is the headquarters of Ikwerre local government area, the constituency of the Minister for Transportation, Mr. Chibiuke Rotimi Ameachi.
Governor Nyesom Wike while addressing journalist at Government House on Sunday evening accused Hon. Wanjoku of instigating the trouble at Ikwerre council secretariat after he discovered that the election did not fovour him.
The governor alleged further that even when supporters of People Democratic Party (PDP) overpowered Wanjoku and his APC supporter, yet Wanjoku desperately hit the retuning officer with his bulletproof car and pushed him inside the bush.
But Wanjoku who is recuperating in an undisclosed hospital yesterday said Governor Wike ordered his thugs at Ikwerre Local government area led by the caretaker committee chairman to shoot him.
He said Wike annoyance was that, him and other APC leaders in the area decided to resist the hijack of electoral materials and the abduction of the returning of officer by PDP thugs.
He alleged that he was marked to be assassinated, adding that his vehicle was damaged after he was shot and attacked by PDP thugs who were not happy because he resisted them from writing result of the rerun election at the secretariat.
Narrating further on what transpired Wanjoku said: “The officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) can testify what happened, they were also attacked including the collation officer, Allwell Egeonu so many thugs were recruited to kill and I was one of those targeted.
“The story of what happened at the Ikwerre council secretariat has set a new record for electoral brigandage in Rivers State. Like a tale told in a war torn movie. They rain bullets on me and some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) this can only reinforce my belief that God does not fail to protect his people.
“The Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State and the caretaker chairman of Ikwerre Local government area, men of the Nigerian Police Force together with some hired armed thugs rained more than 500 rounds of live ammunition on my bullet proof vehicle.
“Under our watchful eyes, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were making entries into the relevant collation sheets while the EO and some INEC ad-hoc staff stood and watch. we came to sabotage their rigging machinery, myself and the Director-General of NIMASA were attacked by these trigger-happy policemen and hired hoodlums.”
