UNEP Report: Why Federal Government Will Fail Over Ogoni Clean Up – Briggs

Paul Obiajunwo Port Harcourt

Niger Delta activist, Mrs. Annkio Briggs has said that the Federal Government will fail on their plan to clean-up Ogoni if they think no other part of Niger Delta devastated environment needs to be cleaned up except Ogoni.

She said her support for Ogoni clean up cannot be compromised but vowed to ensure that the Federal government does the right thing by cleaning up Ogoni and also prepare to clean up other part of the Niger Delta environment devastated by the activities of the Oil and Gas in the area.

Briggs spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital while reacting on the statement credited to her by Ogoni Solidarity Forum (OSF) led by Celestine AkpoBari that she is an enemy of Ogoni people who is working against the clean-up.

Briggs was recently attack by the leader of OSF Celestine AkpoBari and other Ogoni sons after her statement on Ogoni clean up during her interview in one of the radio stations in Port Harcourt.

But she has  said  her experience in the Niger Delta struggle and her contribution to UNEP report there is no way she could be one of the enemies  of  Ogoni people, adding that the verbal attack on her by OSF is political and an insult on his personality and what she belief in as an activist.

The Niger Delta activist noted that she has worked with many prominent sons and daughters of Ogoni  including the son of late environmental right activist Ken Saro-Wiwa  and none of them has ever described her as an enemy.

She however, called on other host communities of Oil and Gas in Niger Delta region to lock their oil on the ground like  Ogoni people, stressing that it could be the  only way to attract federal government sympathy to clean up their environment as they are about to do in Ogoni.

Briggs said: “  I am definitely not an enemy of Ogoni people as they reported,   I am surprised that some people in Ogoni led by AporBari  could insult my personality.  I categorically said that Celestine is lying because I never said anything against Ogoni clean up.

“What I said and I will repeat it anywhere was that if Federal government is sincere about the development of Niger Delta, while they are planning to clean up Ogoni they should also consider that there are other part of the Niger Delta region that required to be cleaned up.

“I didn’t say they should stop Ogoni clean-up,  It is an attack  against me and an attack against what I belief and the things I have work for in the past 18 years. I am calling on other host communities in Niger Delta to lock their oil on the ground like Ogoni people did if that would be the only way to attract clean- up.”
