Ahead of Saturday’s final U-20 Female World Cup qualifying match between Nigeria and South Africa in Benin City, Edo State, the Head Coach of the Nigerian team, Danjuma Christopher, has revealed that the successful outings of the team has been boosted by the warm reception and support they get from the government and people of Edo State. He described the state as a great blessing to the country’s female football.
“Edo State is a great blessing to female football. From the day we stepped in here to play against Tanzania, the reception, the warming up and everything accorded us has given us victory right from our hotel before we kicked the ball.
“And every time we go out to play one of the inspiring things is to also come back again to Edo State to come and see the sports loving people and the government of the state to always make them proud.
“Carrying Nigerians in our mind when we went to South Africa one thing we said is that when we come to Edo, having seen the kind of support we got when we played against Morocco(it was heavily raining and people defied it).
“There is no any other kind of love or support you can get more than that. We took that and said ‘more than the Morocco match we must make people in Edo State and the whole Nigeria happy.’ Edo State has been wonderful.”
Coach Christopher disclosed that the team is still a work in progress and more quality players will be invited to beef it up towards a successful outing at the U-20 Female World Cup coming up in France later in the year.
He promised that in line with tradition the girls will make Nigerians proud at the tournament.
It will be recalled that the Nigerian girls defeated their South African opponents by 2 goals to nil in the first leg match played in South Africa about a forthnight ago.
