South African police disperse students protesting against gender-based violence outside Parliament

Police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse a group of students who were protesting gender-based violence outside South Africa’s parliament.

The students criticised the heavy handed methods of the police. They have vowed to continue protesting.

The has been a spike in gender-based violence cases since the easing of South Africa’s COVID-19 lockdown. In September 2019, South Africa was rocked by nationwide protests against gender-based violence.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of femicide in the world.
