…Union wants Buhari to investigate management
Chris Steven, Abuja
For several hours on Monday, angry workers of National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) locked the main entrance of the headquarters of the Commission situated along Ladoke Akintola Boulevard, Abuja asking President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the activities of management of the Commission.
The protesting workers were kicking against what they called unchecked mismanagement, abuse of office and anti workers activities going on in NAICOM.
Operating under the auspices of Almagamated Union of Public Corporation Civil Service Technical and Recreational Service Employees (AUPCTRE) NAICOM branch , the protesting workers who arrived the corporate headquarters of NAICOM as early as 8am carried placards with veriaous such as ”George Onekhena show us your re-appointment letter” ,”Pay us our promotion arrears” andGhost workers in NAICOM, President Buhari must hear .
Other inscriptions on their placards were ” King Kari Give us our 2016 Training plan”, “NAICOM Executive Management Turned Board Members”,
”Insurance Sector looses Billions due to NAICOM’s bad management “and ”President Buhari Save NAICOM from Collapse “.
No management staff was available to talk to journalists as at the time of filing this report even as protesters continued chanting Labour solidarity songs while some stood in groups discussing various issues affecting the Commission.
Some of the workers who spoke with our correspondent accused the management of the Commission of running it like a personal property alleging that there are a number of ghost workers that President Buhari must investigate.
During the protest, nobody was allowed entry into the premises of NAICOM headquarters who also demanded to meet with the Minister of Finance to present their grievances.
They also threatened to ensure the gate of the Commission remained under lock and key, pending when their demands are met by the management of the Commission.
Leading the protest, the Chairman of AUPCTRE NAICOM, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullate who spoke with our correspondent also accused the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun of violating due process for confirming an undergraduate a director in the Commission.
The AUPCTRE chairman said the Director of Inspectorate, Barineka Thomson joined the Commission in 2012 with NCE and ICAN certificates but graduated in 2013, insisting that as at the time he was made a director, he was still an undergraduate.
” Our demands revolve around welfare, security of our properties, impunity, to mismanagement in the Commission. We have reached a situation in NAICOM in which even if you pass promotion exams, you will not be promoted. And this is because the criteria keep changing.
We have two of our members that were denied promotion, one of them was denied twice even when he passed the cut off mark”.
” We entered into an agreement with the management in June 2015 concerning staff training which they promised to implement by January 2016 and till date nothing was done, instead they took politicians to Kaduna and Abekuta in Ogun State in which they claimed N9m was expended”. He said
