Members of opposition party in Central Senatorial district of Kogi State are currently under siege as suspected political thugs unleashed reign of terror on them attacking and inflicting various degrees of injuries on their victims.
While Property worth several million of Naira were allegedly destroyed in various location of the attacks.
The suspected political thugs numbering about 50 in masks visited the houses of leaders of the Pepoles Democratic Party in the area, attacking and destroying their property.
The attack which started on Saturday when a serving Senator was organising the the empowerment programme and suspected thugs earlier distrusted it.
Sources stated that spill over of the attacked was said to have been taken to the family house of PDP Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Hamed Ogembe at Obeira.
Similar attack was also allegedly carried out by the same hoodlums at the resident of a former member of house of representatives, Alhaji Abdulkarem Salihu in Ihima, Okehi local government area of the state.
An eye witnessed account told journalists that the suspected thugs invaded the area with dangerous weapons were said to have scared people away by shooting sporadically into the air.
It was gathered that thugs allegedly looted his property and destroyed several cars belonging to the former House of Representatives members.
Other houses invaded by the thugs include the state finance of the People’s Democratic Party, Mr. Jude Sule, the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party in Okehi, Mallam Adinoyi Aroke and that of PDP youths leader Mr. Haruna.
Mean while, Senator Ahmed Ogembe has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind the attack in Kogi Central.
In a statement issued yesterday which a copy was made available to newsmen in Lokoja, the Senator said those behind the attack are the coordinators of killers squad being trained to harass, intimidate and unleash mayhem members of the opposition party in the central senatorial districts.
Ogembe reacted to the destruction of property and disturbances that followed the unsuccessful attempt to stop his empowerment program, which eventually took place despite initial attacks by thugs suspected to be loyal to the ruling party, All Progressive Party. (APC).
The senator said except the those behind the crisis are quickly made to face the law, the dangerous trend could continue, which is not safe for the people of Kogi Central.
“We are not only calling on security agencies to effect the arrest we are also asking for their prosecution because we have enough evidences to sue those behind the crime to court.
“After they tried severally to stop the program from holding and were resisted by youths and team of Security men that were with me, they later in the night led same thugs to destroy houses and belongings of members of my party (PDP) and left many injured,” Ogembe said.
The senator who said the security challenge forced him to make night trip back to Abuja due to threat to his life urged public to also hold the state government responsible should anything happen to him.
“It appears these boys has the support of the state government because 24 hours after this sad incident that was widely reported by media, no official statement has been issued by the government to condemn the act or caution the said thugs, ” he said.
The former House Representatives member Alhaji Abdulkarem Salihu who also spoke with newsmen said his resident was invades by the suspected thugs.
He further explained that the hoodlums vandalised four of his vehicles and also damaged all the sliding window in his. House.
He added that it was the security men that save the situation as the hoodlums escaped by jumping the fence when the security men arrived.
The Peoples Democratic Party in Kogi State has described the weekend attack on Senator Ahmed Ogembe, and some members of the party in the central Senatorial District as the lowest level the All Progressive Congress administration in the State has attained.
In a statement issued and signed by Dickson Achadu, Director Research and Documentation, never has politics in the state been dragged to a low, to an extent that the ruling party would unleash mayhem on the opposition.
The party warned that the APC in the Central Senatorial District of the state, is starting an unending war, that would do no one any good.
The PDP urged the APC to learn from the history of the past by ensuring that peace, prevails before, during and after the coming political dispensation, and lamented a situation where top Council Administrators, and some APC stalwarts, acting on superior instruction, would want to snuff life out of the opposition.
The PDP statement called on the Police to fish out the perpetrators of the weekend dastardly act, and lamented that the threat to the life of a serving Senator, former House of Representative Member, Some PDP members in the Central Senatorial District, as cowardly, dastardly, and a heinous crime.
The PDP urged members of its party not to be distracted by the intimidation, describing the act of the APC as the fear of defeat for a government that has inflicted so much pain on the people.
Mean while, the Police Public Relation officer of the Kogi State Police Command, Mr. William Ayah when contact said they are still making contact with the divisional police officers in Kogi Central.
