Still basking in the euphoria of its series of last minute court victories, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, say they would reject plans to manipulate Saturday’s governorship election in the state through the naming of Prof Kayode Soremekun, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti as Chief Returning Officer.
A statement by Ayo Fadaka, Director of Publicity, Ondo State PDP, recalled that Prof. Soremekun played a similar role in what he termed “the compromised Edo election,”
“It is expected that he will use the same template that compromised that election in Ondo State,” the statement issued late Friday night added,
The party emphasised that Soremekun “is not the only Vice Chancellor in Nigeria and as such does not exclusively possess the skill to discharge that responsibility.
“He is not welcome here and INEC will only incur our wrath if it makes any attempt to impose him to superintend over our election considering the fact that we are rejecting this attempt to bring him here.
While acknowledging the powers of INEC to recruit any other person to serve as the Chief Returning Officer, the statement warned that “will certainly and vehemently refuse to allow Soremekun to compromise our election.”
Urging the electoral umpire “to maintain its integrity and not soil its reputation any further by using people of questionable characters to discharge sensitive roles in elections,” the party reminded INEC that Ondo State has “a culture of vehement resistance to election manipulation.”
The statement warned in strong terms “that we will refuse Soremekun’s appointment as our Chief Returning Officer.”
