Obaseki Is Killing Us – Pensioners

A group of pensioners in Edo State, Most Aggrieved Pensioners, have accused the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki of contributing to the steep rise in the death toll of its members “compared to low figures recorded during past administrations in the state.”
In a statement signed by its chairman, Barrister Gabriel Osemwenkhae and the PRO, Amadin Okoro, the pensioners stated that deliberate effort by President Muhammadu Buhari “to avert calamity and minimise penury and hardship confronting pensioners across the country has come to nothing, particularly in Edo State.”
Going further, the Most Aggrieved Pensioners asserted: “We do recall that President Muhammadu Buhari in his effort to cushion pensioners plights authorised the release of the London/Paris Club excess loan interest refunds to various states including Edo State which received over N18billion in different tranches.
“This sum remain unaccounted for and manifestly veiled in secrecy in defiance of public uproar and president’s directive requesting recipient state governor to apply 70 percent value of the amount to pay outstanding pensions and gratuities as well as workers arrears of salaries.
“Despite numerous capital receipts, namely: London/Paris Club loan refunds, ecological funds, VAT, taxes and other internally generated revenues, pending pension arrears and gratuities remain unpaid.”
The pensioners said that the view as harmful “the wanton breach of our constitutional provisions prescribing payment of pension benefits promptly and decisively.
“If our governor swore to uphold the constitution then why act ignobly. It’s pertinent to also add that depriving pensioners their legs mate rights and entitlements amount to dehumanisation.
International human rights conventions, articles and instruments make no pretention about the consequences for such breaches.
According to the pensioners, “the often pronounced claim of no money is a ploy to deceive the uninformed. No doubt, such claim is questionable.”
