Kidnappers free two Nigerians, retain three Dutch

Two Nigerians kidnapped alongside three Dutch by unrepentant militants at Letugbene, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, have regained their freedom.

The Nigerian hostages,  Mr. Femi Soewu and Mr Sunny Ofehe regained their freedom on Monday evening.

Ofehe is Founder/Executive Director Hope for Niger Delta Campaign, a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) based in the Netherlands.

He facilitated the charity mission of the Dutch to the region before the ugly incident occurred.

Ofeghe in a press statement confirmed that the Nigerian victims had been free by the abductors.

He lamented that the kidnappers were still holding their victims just as security sources said the hoodlums had yet to make their demands.

He named the kidnapped Dutch as Mr. Erhard Leffers, Mrs. Marianne Vos and Mr. Jan Andre Groenendijk.

He said two journalists from the Warri chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and some leaders of the communities were present at the scene of the incident.

Narrating how the incident occurred, Ofehe said it happened when the tourists were returning to Warri after assessing the newly built hospital funded by Chevron.

He said: “I and Femi were later blindfolded along one of the creeks and ordered into another boat from the one they first took us with. They took us to unknown location and left us there while still under blind fold and were kept separately.

“ Late Monday evening we were both taken away in a speedboat and brought to another unknown community where they abandoned us.

“The armed men then threatened us to leave the Niger Delta region if we want to remain alive. We were able to find our way through a path to the town and called for help. Some local people ferried us to the nearby jetty from where we were taken to a place where we got a boat to the upland.

“While I sympathize with the families of the remaining abducted victims, I appeal to the kidnappers to please release the other members of my team”,

He said that the gunmen were 10 in number adding that they shot sporadically into the air begite whisking away the victims.

“Shortly after the boat left with the three Dutch nationals another boat  conveying some of the armed men  ordered me and the other Nigerian, Femi from Holland into the boat and they sped off chanting some war songs“, Ofehe said.
