The Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) says it has Research and Development (R and D) results that could handle all the agricultural raw materials in this country to industrial level.
The agency noted that it has over 250 technologies for that are ready for uptake, stressing that it is constantly working and ready to move this country from being a third world country to an industrialised nation.
The Director General of the Agency, Dr. Grace Elemo disclosed in Abuja at the National Forum on Commercialisation of Indigenous R and D Results, with the theme; “Stimulating Economic Growth through Commercialisation of indigenous R&D Results.”
She said that FIIRO has the mandate to do cut-edge research, a demand driven research and a research that would move the nation ahead.
According to her, “today, we are actually showing the automation of processed technology, an indigenous technology that has been developed. We have the automation of the Kunu plant, where you can have Kunu that can stay off the shelve without refrigeration for about two years. It has export potentials and we have now automated, which means from line end you out the raw materials, just buttons on the panel you get your Kunu at the end of the production line. So also Zobo drink has been automated.”
She added that the initiative of the agency was to ensure that all the agency’s processed technology would now be automated to industrial large scale; saying, “It can now be handle both from the small scale medium and the large scale because they have been designed and our engineering parameters, drawings and calculations, it is possible to move this mechanisms and move the process lines to any level at any scale. So, we have been able to achieve that.”
Asked what FIIRO is doing to help government achieve its aim in the agricultural sector, Elemo noted: “We are the core of agriculture value chain. Now if you produce and you are not able to process for optimum utilisation; then, we are making a mockery of agriculture. Even the ministry of agriculture is aware of the importance of processing, the importance of adding value to agriculture for optimum achievement and success in the agriculture. We play a very core part in the agricultural value chain because our mandate is clear, that is,do research and development in all of the raw materials in Nigeria with emphasis in the area of agriculture
“In FIIRO, we have touched all agricultural raw materials in Nigeria, there is none that we haven’t touched. We have R and D results that can handle all the agricultural raw materials in this country to industrial level, even waste management of all the agricultural process.
“We have over 250 technologies for uptake, this is not those that are still coming up. Last year alone we have about 20 patents registered in the name of FIIRO. So, we are constantly working and we are ready to move this country from being a third world country to an industrialised nation.Using agriculture, the cassava value chain alone in FIIRO, we have over 25 products of industrial development from it,” she said.
She assured that the expo would not ended like another talk show as industrialists are also part of the programme.
