IGP’s Crime Commander In Rivers Bag UNIPORT Award

 The commander of a Special team in Rivers State set up by the Inspector-General of Police to stem crime in the state, DCP Benneth Igwe, has been awarded Distinguished  Friend of the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT.

The management which gave the award at the weekend  during the 4th Chancellors Dinner and Award Night , 2017 as part of the 31st convocation ceremony of the institution, said the award was in recognition of the contribution of his team in tackling killings, cultism, assassination of lecturers, armed robbery activities and others within and around UNIPORT.

In a profile sighted by newsmen, the institution said it was based on the pro-activeness of the IGP crime team in the area that students and lecturers could live in a peaceful and orderly environment.

“Following CSP Igwe’s track record in fighting crime and criminalities, he was drafted with well equipped and trained officers and men to the South-South region in August 2016 as the Commander of the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit with its base at Aluu, Port Harcourt.

Responding, Igwe dedicated the award to the IGP Ibrahim Idris and noted that the recognition is a call for greater serves to ensure that criminality does not resurface in the area.

Igwe recounted that before he resumed duty in the area that criminality was the order of the day in the area and stated the intervention of the IGP restored calm in the area.

Igwe said: “I am surprise because I don’t know that people can appreciate what the police are doing. I feel happy that an institution like UNIPORT honoured police because of what we are doing. Before we came here was no go area. Lecturers don’t go out at will.

“Kidnapping was much in this environment. That period a lecturer was kidnapped. We worked hard and the lecturer was released. We also promised that such thing will not happen again, by the grace of God and the support from the IGP we have not recorded any kidnap case here again. We have been in intelligence policing. It has really helped us.”
