Gunmen Kill Six Policemen, 13 Others In Plateau


Armed men suspected to be Fulani militia stormed some villages in Riyom local government of Plateau state killing at least 19 people including  six mobile policemen and 13 civilians.
The gunmen also set several churches ablaze and burn a numbers of residential houses during the attack.
The six mobile police officers were among the team of security agencies drafted to the areas to restore peace. They were ambushed by the gunmen while heading towards a location where they gunmen were allegedly using as their training camp.
A team of the special task force on Jos crisis code named operation safe haven had earlier on Monday this week discovered a catchment of arms allegedly stocked the gunmen, including five sub-machine guns (SMG) and undisclosed numbers of AK-47 Rifle.
Two villages attacked are Jol and Rim in Riyom local government of Plateau state where gunmen were said to have been training in a forest recently.
An member of the Jol community, Amos Dangyang said the gunmen stormed the village at about 1:30am yesterday (Wednesday) shooting sporadically.
Dangyang said, “We were sleeping when they came, the over powered our local vigilante and entered the village, we were woken up with sounds of their gun, I managed to escape into the forest, I slept in the bush till dawn.
“I came out from my hiding at dawn to see our people they killed, in Garko-Rim village, five people were killed and their residences burnt down. In Jol Village, 8 people were killed, a church and seven residential houses were burnt down as their occupants managed to escape the gunmen” said Dangyang.
Communities in Riyom has raised alarm two week ago that they had noticed a training camp of Fulani men behind a hill near Rim village. The Fulani denied the allegation and described it as false alarm.
The attack came two days after the gunmen killed a community leader at his residence in Shonong.
Farmers in Berom land especially in Bachit district have abandoned their farm lands and could not cultivate them for fear of being attacked by unknown gunmen.
Member representing Riyom constituency, Hon Daniel Dem confirmed the attack. He said his constituency has been under siege since the last one month but the security agencies had neglected all our cry on them to nib the impending bloodshed.
Though STF could not confirm casualty figures it the attack as the time of sending this report, members of the affected communities confirmed that the special task force has drafted two armored personnel carriers cars to the scene after discovering the gunmen are wielding sophisticated arms.
