Flood Sacks Over 100 Homes, Churches, Destroy Property In Rivers
Paul Obiajunwo, Port Harcourt
Hundreds of homes and over four churches in Rumuolumeni community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State have been sacked by rain flood.
The flood which resulted from the heavy down pour on Saturday, Sunday and Monday had also destroyed property worth millions of naira.
It was gathered that churches could not hold worship on Sunday, within the area due to the heavy flood that has taken over the area.
Although, the area seems flood prone, the residents blamed the incident on the lack of drainage system in the area.
Pastor Namso Udoh whose church was also affected  complained that since the construction of the Rumuolumeni-Iwofe road that they have never lived comfortably in the area.
Pastor Udoh called on the State Government to intervene to save the residents of the area from continuous flooding during and after rains.
He further called for quick provision of relief material for the affected persons, adding that such would help the people to live a normal live before things will be put in order.
Another  victims of the flooding, Mr. Inyesoemi Benibo, told our correspondent that several property belonging to the churches and residents of the area were damaged in the flood.
Benibo, who is a landlord in area, blamed the construction company that handled the Rumuolumeni road project for the flood disaster.
He noted that the company did not construct good drainage to flank the newly built road in the area, adding that the water became too heavy for the gutters to carry.
Benibo recalled that the residents of the area had approached the company and complained over the poor handling the drainage in the area that empties water into a canal in the area.
He also noted that there was a blockade in the drainage that obstructed the free flow of water, causing the flooding.
He said, “We have been rendered homeless because of flood, my family slept inside a church far from this place while I slept inside my car. Even one of my neighbors has not been seen since last night we saw him parking his property and at that time his family moved to another place, nobody knows what has happened to him now.
“The MCC company is the fault of all this suffering now, I remember we called them when they were constructing this Iwofe road which even attracted the attention of Governor Nyesom Wike who even ordered them to canalize that area properly, but they did not listen, now the small canal has been blocked, the water is not flowing.”
