General David Rodriguez, head of US Africa Command, has said that Boko Haram militants have lost territories in Nigeria’s northeast but remain a grave threat to the civilian population.
Rodriguez spoke with Wall Street Journal in an interview recently in Brussels, where he was for consultations with the European Union military chiefs who gathered to discuss the rising threat of Islamic State militants in Libya and other parts of Africa.
He however did not give details for his statement.
“They are different; a year ago they held more territory . “Now they maintain control of less area,” the General said.
He debunked Boko Haram’s recent claim in a recording in August that, saying the claim was not true.
The terrorist group had said in the claim, “We are still present everywhere we have been before”.
Rodriguez said the terrorists, who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in March, have also modelled their propaganda and latest attacks after the IS brutal tactics in the Middle East.
